To run a boarding kennel or cattery, you need a licence from the local authority. The number of dogs and cats that may be accommodated will be specified on the licence along with other specific conditions.
No person may keep a boarding establishment for animals without first obtaining a license from their Local Authority.
A local authority may authorise an officer, veterinary surgeon or practitioner to inspect licensed premises.

Eligibility criteria
The following criteria will be considered when the application is being evaluated:
- that the animals will be kept in suitable accommodation at all times. Suitable accommodation takes into account the construction and size of the accommodation, the number of animals to be housed in it, facilities for exercising the animals, cleanliness and temperature, lighting and ventilation provisions
- that suitable food, drink and bedding materials will be provided and that the animals are exercised and visited regularly
- that step’s are taken to prevent and control the spread of disease among the animals and that isolation facilities are in place
- that adequate protection is provided to the animals in the case of fire and other emergencies.
- that a register is kept. The register should contain a description of all animals received, their arrival and departure date and the name and address of the owner. The register should be available to be inspected at any time by a local authority officer, veterinary surgeon or practitioner

Costs
The cost of an annual Animal Boarding Establishment Licence is £161.00 and is renewable every January 1st. The applicant will also be required to pay the fee for a veterinary inspection.

You can now apply for your licence online, where payment (if required) can be taken electronically or alternatively you can obtain an application form by contacting us using the details below
Receipt of application notification
If making an application online you will receive a notification of receipt of payment once a payment has been successfully made. You will then receive an e-mail notification that your application is being processes.
If an application is sent into our Licensing department you will receive a letter notifying you that the application is being processes along with a receipt of payments made within 7 working days
If you hand an application form into our reception office you will receive a receipt of payment immediately and will receive a letter notifying you that the application is being processes within 7 working days
