The Big Welsh Bite Food Festival 2023 was a roaring success!

Despite the event being called off on day 1 due to the forecasted high winds and rain which would have potentially damaged infrastructure, over 20 000 residents and visitors came along to Ynysangharad War Memorial Park on Sunday 6th August to enjoy free entertainment and all the amazing food on offer!

This year, the event hosted over 50 food vendors and alongside the arena acts and cookery demonstrations, the newly refurbished bandstand was put to good use with local choirs singing as the Park’s Centenary was celebrated alongside the official opening of Canolfan Calon Taf, the park’s new education and community centre.

Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Business said:

The Big Welsh Bite is a highlight in the Council’s annual event calendar and whilst everyone involved was very disheartened to have to make the very difficult decision to cancel day 1, it was absolutely the right thing to do given the weather forecast at the time.  As was stated at the time, public safety is at the forefront of all our event planning.

Many of the Big Welsh Bite traders had multiple events cancelled on the same weekend but the people of Rhondda Cynon Taf and beyond came out in force on day 2 to enjoy and support the fantastic traders – many of whom sold out in hours and were delighted with the response from the public.

The Big Welsh Bite is part of a fantastic annual calendar of events organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council which includes Santa’s Toy Mine at Rhondda Heritage Park Museum and the world-famous Nos Galan Road Races which take place on New Year’s Eve in Mountain Ash.  For info on forthcoming events, please take a look here and follow @whatsonrct on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates and photo albums from our events.
