An important repair scheme will soon begin to the footbridge at Colliery Street in Trehafod, which provides a key local link into Barry Sidings Country Park. The footbridge will need to be closed to safely carry out the repairs.
The Council has appointed Taziker Ltd to deliver the scheme, which will begin on Monday, May 15. In addition to the main works to paint the bridge, the council will also be undertaking masonry and concrete repairs, parapet replacement and final resurfacing. No major strengthening work is required. The scheme will also include repairs to a section of the retaining wall near the footbridge.
The footbridge will be brought out of use to pedestrians at the start of the scheme (May 15), which is expected to last around 12 weeks. An alternative route is available via Trehafod Road, Cadwgan Terrace and the Barry Sidings Footpath, which is located on the opposite side of the River Rhondda.
A local road closure (from 7.30am, May 15) is also required at the section of Colliery Street near the bridge, between Western Street and Afon Street – but access to all premises will be maintained. A short alternative route is available via Great Street and Colliery Street. Access is unable to be maintained for emergency services nor pedestrians at the closed section of Colliery Street.
This repair scheme in Trehafod is included within the Council’s £27.665m Highways, Transportation and Strategic Projects Capital Programme for 2023/24 – as part of a £780,000 funding allocation for Parks Structures.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “The Colliery Street footbridge in Trehafod provides an important local link to and from Barry Sidings Country Park, and the upcoming repair scheme will ensure the structure remains safe for the benefit of the community. Along with the repairs to the bridge itself, works to a section of retaining wall will also be completed.
“The Council is responsible for maintaining and repairing more than 1,500 structures that support our road network across the County Borough, and our significant investment in this area continues in 2023/24. Our latest Capital Programme agreed in March has allocated £4.45m for Highways Structures and £780,000 for Parks Structures – and this is separate to the £20.1m Welsh Government-funded programme for Storm Dennis repairs in the year ahead.
