Key information for Sunday as we support the Tour of Britain 2023

Tour map

The Tour of Britain 2023 will be passing through Rhondda Cynon Taf on the afternoon of Sunday, September 10 – and here is some important information for residents about how the event will be organised on the day.

Stage 8 of the prestigious cycling event will start in Margam and end in Caerphilly, and will pass through many Rhondda Cynon Taf communities over a total estimated period of around three hours between midday and 3pm.

A brief summary of the route through the County Borough is via Llanharry, Llanharan, Treorchy, Treherbert, Rhigos Mountain Road, Rhigos, Hirwaun, Llwydcoed, Trecynon, Gadlys, Aberdare, Maerdy Mountain Road, Maerdy, Ferndale, Blaenllechau, Llanwonno, Perthcelyn, Tyntetown and Abercynon.

The event organisers will be operating a ‘rolling’ road closure along the route, as the cyclists move through local roads, villages and towns. This means that traffic will be held for a short period of time, and marshalled at each location.

There is a Traffic Regulation Order in place to enable the ‘rolling’ road closure, and it will also include a temporary prohibition of waiting at certain locations – where residents will be asked to avoid parking to allow the event to proceed safely. Event organisers have published notices along the route in advance.

We’ve included some links below which will be useful for residents to find out more about the event and the arrangements on the day:

We’d like to thank road users, visitors and residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the afternoon, as the Council supports one of the world’s leading cycle races as it passes through our County Borough.
