Vision Products is proud to announce that a member of their staff, Adam Harcombe, has been shortlisted for the David Grainger Award as part of the BASE Supported Employment Awards 2024. The BASE awards celebrate the outstanding work within the Supported Employment community across the UK, and the David Grainger Award, Sponsored by Outshine, honours a disabled person who inspires others to have high aspirations in employment and who has significantly changed perceptions of what disabled individuals can achieve.

Vision Products, a part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, is a leading provider of employment opportunities for disabled individuals, offering a range of services and products designed to support independent living. The organisation is committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive and contribute meaningfully.

This announcement is being made on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. This recognition comes as a testament to Adam’s remarkable journey and his unwavering commitment to breaking barriers by continuing to thrive in his role with Vision Products, as well as reinforcing their commitment to inclusivity and empowerment for all as an employer.

Adam Harcombe said: “The best views are from the hardest climb, and now I feel like I can see the top. It has been an emotional and physical journey for me, working at Vision Products has helped me in more ways than I ever could imagine, and I’ve made friends for life.”

Adam’s story is one of resilience and inspiration. After suffering a life-changing brain trauma injury due to a violent attack, Adam faced significant challenges. However, his determination and positive mindset have led to extraordinary achievements. Adam actively fundraises for charities and competes in shot put at the Welsh Para Championships. In his role at Vision Products, Adam inspires his colleagues, many of whom also have disabilities, by demonstrating that they too can achieve remarkable things in the face of adversity.

Adam’s nomination for this award underscores his impact on the community. His advocacy for good careers for disabled individuals is evident through his volunteer work as a patient befriender, where he offers hope and guidance to those facing similar challenges. One notable example is his support for a man who became paralysed due to a brain injury. Adam’s encouragement helped this individual find a new purpose in coaching others, highlighting the transformative power of his inclusive approach. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the human spirit, and the impact one individual can have on a community.

Cllr Caple, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “Here at RCT Council, we are incredibly proud of Adam’s achievements and his dedication to breaking down barriers for disabled individuals in employment.

“His story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on a community, and we are thrilled to see him being recognised on such prestigious platform like the BASE awards.

“Announcing this on International Day of Persons with Disabilities makes it even more special, as it highlights the Council’s and Vision Products’ commitment to inclusivity and empowerment for all.

“I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Adam for his remarkable achievement being shortlisted for the David Grainger Award. A fantastic achievement and very well deserved.”
