Visitors to Aberdare and Pontypridd town centres may notice works taking place across our Council-owned car parks throughout September – to install new ticket machines that will accept contactless card payments.
Ticket machines in Council car parks have, up until now, only accepted cash payments – due to the high processing fees for card payments by Payment Service Providers. However, the Council has now secured funding from the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund to contribute towards the costs.
The Council has recently trialled the new machines that accept contactless card payments at Millfield Car Park in Pontypridd.
We can now confirm that contactless card payments will begin to be rolled out across all Council car parks in Aberdare and Pontypridd. Work will begin in the week commencing Monday, September 2, and the new machines will be installed on a phased basis throughout the month.
Current car park costs will remain the same. Prices remain very competitive, particularly in comparison to private car parks offering card payment methods. The new machines being installed will support both card and cash payments.
Please note, the installation will be a transitional process – and car park users should anticipate needing to continue to pay by cash over the weeks ahead.
The Council-owned car parks in Aberdare are Crown Buildings, Library, Green Street, Duke Street, High Street, Nant Row, Rock Grounds and Ynys. Gadlys Pit Car Park is for permit-holders only, and will not require the new machines. In Pontypridd, the Council car parks are at Gas Road, Goods Yard (Council-owned section only), Millfield, Berw Road, Sardis Road and Catherine Street.
