Improving access to maintain culverts at key location near Hirwaun

Rhigos Road

Advanced notice is being given for a Resilient Roads work scheme starting in the New Year, which will require temporary traffic lights on A4061 Rhigos Road, Hirwaun.

Work at the pictured location will include installing an improved vehicle access alongside two culvert inlets which were upgraded in previous years. The improved access will allow for more efficient maintenance of the culvert inlets, especially during storm events, to clear any blockages and improve the flow of the watercourse.

The Council has appointed Peter Simmons as the contractor to deliver the works, which start on Monday, January 5 (2026). They are expected to last up to four weeks.

This main scheme will follow site investigations in the form of trial holes, which were completed in the week commencing December 15, 2025.

A single lane closure will be required to safely carry out the main works, which will be managed by two-way traffic lights.

The scheme has been funded through Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads Fund for the current financial year.

The Council has secured more than £6 million from Welsh Government for flood alleviation work in 2025/26, across the Small Scale Works Grant, the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Programme, and the Resilient Roads Fund. Individual schemes under these programmes are delivered using Council match funding, which is set at 10% for Resilient Roads works.

Thanks to residents and road users in advance for your cooperation.
