Construction of two bridges as part of Rhondda Fach Active Travel Route

Blaenllechau 2

The Council has provided an update on recent work to build two footbridges in Blaenllechau, as part the Rhondda Fach Active Travel Route’s construction.

Phase Four works got underway last summer, continuing the route across Ferndale and passing through Blaenllechau – following the alignment of the old railway line.

Find out more about the Phase Four works, and the wider Active Travel Route.

To connect this phase with the completed works at Maerdy (Phase Two), the ‘Blaenllechau North’ footbridge has recently been installed – pictured left.

This 30-metre structure has provided a solution to a missing railway bridge where Maerdy and Ferndale meet, at an isolated location of the community route roughly to the north of Ferndale Community School.

The second structure, the ‘Blaenllechau South’ footbridge, is a small nine-metre footbridge that forms a link to the active travel route from Avon Street in Ferndale – pictured right.

Please note, both bridges will be opened upon the overall completion of Phase Four this spring.

The works are being funded by an allocation to Rhondda Cynon Taf in the 2024/25 Active Travel Fund by Welsh Government.

Thanks to the community for your continued cooperation as Phase Four enters its final stages.
