On Tuesday, July 1, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council’s Corporate Design Team and Directorate of Education and Inclusion Services received two awards at the Education Buildings Wales Awards, hosted at The Parkgate Hotel, Cardiff. The ceremony celebrates excellence across the sector, recognising outstanding consultants, contractors, clients, architects, and projects, alongside achievements in innovation and sustainability.
The awards presented to the Council were:
- Client of the Year, sponsored by Atkins Realis, for the new 3 to 19 ALN School in Clydach Vale.
- Inspiring Learning Spaces Award of the Year, sponsored by HLM Architects – Llanilltud Faerdref Primary School.
Ysgol Afon Wen was also highly commended within the Project of the Year award.
The awards serve as a symbol of all the work that has gone into the recent school improvements and new school buildings. Council projects are being funded in partnership with the Council and the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme and the Mutual Investment Model (MIM), which is the revenue funding stream of Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme aims to transform the learning experience of pupils, ensuring they are taught in classrooms with the technologies and facilities needed to support the delivery of the Curriculum for Wales.
Councillor Rhys Lewis, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and the Welsh Language, said: “We are delighted to have achieved these awards and commendation, they represent the hard work and dedication that has gone into our school improvement projects. The Welsh Government and our partners have helped make this possible and we continue to look forward to a future of new and modern school buildings and facilities that give the very best opportunities to our learners across Rhondda Cynon Taf.”
In March 2025, the Council shared an update on the next tranche of projects that will benefit from major investment in new Education facilities via the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. Many of these projects are in the early feasibility and design stages and will be added to this webpage once they develop further.
