Increased parking at Treorchy Railway Station following investment

The new Treorchy Park and Ride facility has been fully-constructed, and Transport for Wales has now brought the 52-space car park into use for train users – significantly increasing local access to public transport.

The new parking facility has been created in a joint project – with the Council providing funding for the construction costs via the ongoing Highways and Transportation Capital Programme. The scheme has utilised unused land owned by Transport for Wales. It is located off Clos Ystadfechan – to the south of Cae Mawr football pitch and south-east of Treorchy Railway Station.

Transport for Wales is the operator of the new Treorchy Park and Ride facility, and brought it into use for the first time from Wednesday, July 9.

The new facility is being operated in line with Transport for Wales’ existing Park and Ride uses, and is intended for public transport users rather than a general local car park. Find out more about Park and Ride facilities on TfW’s website.

The first site activity related to the scheme got underway in summer 2024, with a series of drainage pipeline works along the football field – as well as the installation of an attenuation tank to the north of the pitch. This system will more efficiently convey rainwater from the new car park into the river. This work was completed by November 2024, enabling the start of the main works.

The new car park contains 43 standard car park spaces, six EV charging spaces, and three disabled spaces. The site design has included sustainable drainage through seven rain gardens, each about the size of a parking space.

Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “I’m very pleased that the new Treorchy Park and Ride facility has now been opened to the public, which has provided a total of 52 parking spaces that are dedicated to train users – replacing the much smaller car park that had previously served the station. The Council provided £733,000 capital funding to construct the facility, while Transport for Wales will operate it into the future.

“Encouraging more people to use public transport for all or part of their daily journeys is hugely important. Reducing the number of vehicles on our roads in this way will protect the environment, reduce traffic congestion, and shorten journey times. People accessing public transport will in turn benefit from more services per hour and better facilities via the South Wales Metro – and having more parking options at our local railway stations will support this investment.

“I’d like to thank the community in Treorchy for their patience and cooperation while the scheme was completed – both for the drainage work that started last summer, and the main construction phase through the winter and spring. I’m sure this will be a very well-used facility by the community and commuters.”

Alexia Course, Chief Commercial Officer at Transport for Wales, added: "The opening of the new car parking facility at Treorchy Railway Station is a great example of how we’re working with our partners, like Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, to make public transport more accessible and convenient for communities across Wales.

"By investing in infrastructure that supports integrated travel, we can create a more sustainable transport network that meets the needs of today’s passengers and future generations.

“This facility will reduce the local community’s reliance on long distance travel by car. Making it easier and more accessible for people in Treorchy, and surrounding areas, to choose rail for their journeys."
