Targeted flood alleviation work has been completed in Cwmbach, using Welsh Government funding to reduce the risk of flooding within the community.
The scheme for Tirfounder Road and Bro Deg has aimed to tackle a known risk at an unnamed ordinary watercourse, which originates east of Bro Deg and conveys to the River Cynon.
The watercourse previously flooded in storms Dennis and Chiara, with the primary cause identified as being debris blocking the watercourse channel and associated culvert network.
Flood alleviation work got underway in early June 2025, and was completed ahead of schedule on Friday, July 25.
The scheme has repaired the ordinary watercourse with scour protection and debris control measures.
This intends to stabilise the channel and embankments, minimise scour damage, and reduce blockages – reducing the risk of surface water and ordinary watercourse flooding.
Council contractor Hammond ECS Ltd also installed new benches, to provide the community with places to enjoy the woodland area.
Tirfounder Road/Bro Deg was a named scheme in Welsh Government’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management programme for 2025/26, under which £2.83 million has been secured for Rhondda Cynon Taf.
The Council has also secured £1.69 million from the Small Scale Works Grant scheme, and £1.5 million from the Resilient Roads Grant, for this financial year.
Thanks to the community for your cooperation while the works were carried out in recent weeks.
