Virtual Reality Brings Joy to People with Dementia

PlayFrame VR Session

A Virtual Reality (VR) session for people with dementia was held at Pontypridd Museum, thanks to a collaborative effort between Pontypridd Town Council, Pontypridd Men’s Shed, PlayFrame, and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, allowing people to relive cherished memories.

The event introduced the innovate ‘Inside – Outside’ project, led by PlayFrame, which uses modern VR technology to enrich the lives of people living with dementia. By enabling users to revisit cherished memories and explore new environments from the comfort of a chair, the project is transforming how care is delivered in residential settings.

Originally launched in Caerphilly in May 2024 with support from a National Lottery Grant, the initiative has already made a meaningful impact in local care homes. Now, with the support of a Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) grant enabled through the Council’s Community Development Team, Pontypridd Men’s Shed is working to bring this powerful experience to older people across Rhondda Cynon Taf.

During the session, local residents had the opportunity to try out the VR headsets and experience firsthand how immersive technology can support memory, wellbeing, and social connection.

Councillor Gareth Caple, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care and Older Persons Champion, said: “This is a fantastic example of how technology can be used to enhance the quality of life for those living with dementia. I am pleased to see the community come together during the taster session to explore the use of VR in care homes.

“I am excited to see how this project continues to expand over the coming months.”

The project originally began during the COVID-19 Pandemic, when it became increasingly clear that residents in care homes were more isolated than ever before. By capturing bespoke 360-degree videos of local area and integrating them with VR headsets, residents were able to explore a virtual world that was otherwise inaccessible.

The project now features numerous immersive videos for individuals to explore, covering locations like Barry Island, Roath Park, Cwm Darran Park, Margam Park, and Caerphilly Male Voice Choir rehearsals.
