Installation of small kiosk at key location in Pontypridd Town Centre

Preparatory work to install a small kiosk at the redeveloped bingo hall site in Pontypridd, to sell food and drink to take away, will start on site next week (June 17) – before the kiosk is then delivered to the site a week later.

Planning permission was granted for the new kiosk during September 2024, to be permanently located on the redeveloped public space which is positioned next to the recently-established Railway Station South bus stops (pictured).

Work to prepare the area for the installation of the food and drink kiosk begins from Tuesday, June 17, and is expected to last around two weeks.

From June 17, residents and visitors will notice a section of the public space cordoned off on a temporary basis, to enable service connections to the new kiosk to be established. The kiosk itself has been constructed off-site, and will be delivered to Pontypridd in the following week, starting Monday, June 23.

No significant traffic management is expected, with only a slight disruption anticipated while a delivery vehicle is positioned within the lane next to the site. The Council has requested this is completed outside of peak travel hours.

A crane will then be used to lower the kiosk into its permanent position – on the upper elevation of the site. The timber structure will have a flat roof, and will accommodate a retail/kitchen area, store, and staff toilet. It will provide visitor information and be complemented with moveable outdoor seating.

Councillor Mark Norris, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Development and Prosperity, said: “The new food and drink kiosk on the former bingo hall site will be a great addition to Pontypridd and its commuters, and I’m pleased that installation works will get underway soon. We expect the kiosk to be particularly popular with commuters accessing nearby public transport – whether they are using the nearby bus stops, or the railway station a short distance away.

“Since planning permission was granted during the autumn, the Council has been undertaking an important tender exercise to secure a permanent tenant to run the kiosk. This process is now entering its final stages, and we’re looking forward to announcing the successful operator very soon.

“Our regeneration investment continues to have excellent momentum across the town – with the delivery of YMa, Y Muni, Llys Cadwyn and Cwrt yr Orsaf in recent times, and continued funding across Ynysangharad War Memorial Park. The exciting ‘riverside plaza’ scheme for the former M&S site continues to progress well having started in February, complementing the quality public realm at the former bingo hall site. A small kiosk selling food and drink was always planned within this site, and it is now close to becoming operational.

“Residents and visitors to Pontypridd Town Centre will notice an area of the former bingo hall site cordoned off from Monday, as preparations are made for delivery of the kiosk in the following week, from June 23. Minimal disruption is expected, with the Railway Station South bus stops still available as usual.”
