The community can now find out more and have their say on the modern Residential Dementia Care Home for Ferndale that the Council is committed to delivering. The building’s design is currently being prepared and developed, and the public’s feedback will help to inform a final planning application.
The Council will deliver the 32-bed home, which will be a first-class facility for residential dementia care to replace the existing Ferndale House Care Home on Station Road. The existing setting’s established and committed workforce will transfer to the new development when it is completed, alongside the current residents.
The new care home will focus on care for people living with dementia, and benefit from a purpose-built design and modern facilities such as sensory rooms. The facility will be built at the former ‘Chubb’ Factory site in Ferndale, near the newly-built primary school. Initial groundworks and surveys have progressed for the new development.
A local public exhibition and ‘drop-in’ event took place in March 2025, where the community could find out more and ask questions about the planned new care home. We are now offering a Pre Application Consultation to provide more details about the design proposals. This consultation is being hosted by LRM Planning consultants.
The community is invited to visit the dedicated consultation page on LRM Planning’s website, that provides more details about how to have a say in the process. This consultation runs until Thursday, June 19.
The webpage contains general information about the proposed development’s design and use, as well as more detailed information from the draft planning application – including site plans, drawings, and reports such as the Design and Access statement. All feedback that is received during this consultation will be considered in finalising the planning submission, which is currently expected to be made in summer 2025.
Councillor Gareth Caple, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “The Council has made clear its absolute commitment to delivering a new, modern care home in Ferndale – specialising in dementia care. This will represent a multi-million pound investment for the Rhondda Fach, with the accommodation benefitting from first-class facilities. I’m pleased the process of delivering this development has now reached the Pre Application Consultation, which enables the community to find out more.
“The Ferndale project will be our latest state-of-the-art care accommodation, after the Council delivered Extra Care housing schemes in Aberaman and Graig in recent years. We’re also currently building a third Extra Care scheme in Porth, along with a specialist care accommodation in Gelli. Along with the Ferndale scheme, we’ve also made commitments to build a joint Extra Care and dementia care accommodation in Mountain Ash, and an accommodation for people with learning disabilities in adulthood, in Church Village.
“I’d urge all interested members of the community to find out more about the design proposals for the new Ferndale dementia care home, before the June 19 deadline. This includes accessing key plans, drawings and documents that would make up the final planning submission for the development. This is the second opportunity for residents to have input following the public exhibition in March, as we’re keen to involve the local community as much as possible.”
