Next phase of scheduled culvert repairs to start in Mountain Ash

Troed y Rhiw Road - Copy

The second phase of major culvert repairs at Troed y Rhiw Road in Mountain Ash will get underway next week – but please be assured that through traffic on the A4059 will remain unaffected.

Urgent repairs were initially undertaken following Storm Bert, and a main repair scheme to rectify damage and ensure greater resilience to future storm events is taking place over two phases of work.

Phase one was completed in mid-April 2025, and the second phase will now follow on as planned from Monday, May 12 – lasting around four weeks.

The upcoming work will upsize a section of pipe beneath the road and install an overflow system alongside it. In addition, a new manhole will be installed along the network.

A local road closure at the lower section of Troed y Rhiw Road will be required to make safe progress.

Troed y Rhiw Road will close between the A4059 and its junction with Rowan Close and Bron-y-Deri – where there will be three-way traffic lights.

An alternative route for motorists is via the upper section of Troed y Rhiw Road, The Poplars, Navigation Street, Jeffrey Street, Dyffryn Road and A4059 New Road – or this route in reverse order.

The dedicated right turn lane in the centre of the A4059 will be brought out of use during this time, as there will be no direct access onto Troed y Rhiw Road.

Access will be maintained for pedestrians and emergency service vehicles. Cyclists should follow the alternative route noted above.

The RCT Streetcare Team will carry out the site activity alongside Arch Services Ltd.

The Council has secured £4.52 million from Welsh Government for flood alleviation in 2025/26 – across its Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management and Small Scale Works Grant programmes.

This is in addition to £1.5 million funding towards 10 further schemes via the Resilient Roads Fund, for the current financial year.

Thanks to the community in advance for your cooperation.
