Night-time resurfacing to renew coloured areas of key A4059 junction

Quarter Mile - Copy

Please be advised, resurfacing work to renew the coloured sections at the A4059 Quarter Mile junction in Abercynon will take place from May 27, using four night-time work shifts (7pm-2am) to significantly minimise disruption.

During the work hours, through traffic on the A4059 will be maintained with two-way traffic lights – while the junction will be out of use for traffic heading to and from Abercynon. This repeats the arrangements during the recent work in April 2025, that resurfaced the carriageway and renewed the white lining.

The Council’s contractor will focus on restoring the coloured sections of the junction between Tuesday, May 27, and Friday, May 30 – from 7pm-2am on each of the four nights of work. The work will therefore end by 2am on Saturday, May 31. All traffic management will be lifted outside of these hours.

Please note, the cats’ eyes will also be replaced on this section of road at a later date, while the Quarter Mile junction improvements will complement a wider investment package on the A4059, from Abercynon to Cwmbach, to renew the white lining on the road and replace all of the current cats’ eyes.

During the upcoming work (7pm-2am between May 27-30), temporary two-way traffic lights will be used on the A4059 at Quarter Mile Junction. This will ensure the main arterial route through the Cynon Valley remains open, while enabling the contractor’s workforce to proceed in a safe environment.

A temporary road closure will also be in place on the B4275 – directly from Quarter Mile Junction to its junction from Park View. This means there will be no access to and from Abercynon via the junction during the work hours. Please find a map of the closure area and an alternative route here.

An alternative route for motorists is via the A4059, (A470) Abercynon Roundabout, the A472, Fiddler’s Elbow Roundabout, the A4054, and the B4275 – or this route in reverse order. Access will be maintained for emergency services and pedestrians, but will not be maintained to premises. Thanks to residents and road users in advance for your cooperation.

Resurfacing at the Quarter Mile junction was earmarked for completion in the 2025/26 Highways and Transportation Capital Programme, with an £80,000 funding allocation. The Programme provides a £6.94 million investment to resurface local roads, which includes 78 named schemes in our communities.

The improvements at Quarter Mile junction are an important element of wider road safety improvements that are in the process of being implemented along the A4059 Cynon Valley route, supported by Go Safe. These include reducing current speed limits and introducing an average speed camera system, in response to a marked increase in high-severity collisions in recent years.
