Traffic arrangements for VE Day parade and service in Aberdare

Aberdare Cenotaph 2024 - Copy

Residents, businesses and visitors to Aberdare Town Centre are reminded about the traffic arrangements required on Sunday morning to enable a VE Day commemoration event.

The May 11 event will include a parade from Aberdare Library at 10.30am, proceeding down Canon Street to the cenotaph at Victoria Square.

A commemorative service will then begin at the cenotaph at 11am, before a post-service march at 11.20am towards the Aberdare Memorial Garden.

The first of two road closures will take place from 10.30am to 11.20am, to facilitate the parade and the cenotaph service.

The entire length of Canon Street will close (to its junction with Bute Street), along with Victoria Square (between Cardiff Street and Bute Street), the southbound lane of High Street (between Seymour Street and Canon Street), and Cardiff Street (between Victoria Square and Cross Street).

Residents will be provided access to Seymour Street and adjacent streets from High Street, via Gadlys Roundabout.

From north of the closure, an alternative route is via Gadlys Roundabout, A4233 and the A4059 Aberdare Bypass. In the opposite direction, proceed via Tinneys Roundabout, Cardiff Street, Bute Street, Victoria Square and High Street.

A map of this closure and the alternative routes is included on the Council’s website.

The second road closure will then follow from 11.20am to 11.30am, to enable to the parade from Victoria Square to the Memorial Garden.

Bute Street will close at its junction with Victoria Square, along with Monk Street (at its junction with High Street) and Church Street (at its access to High Street).

The access roads to High Street Car Park and to Rock Grounds will also be closed during this time.

Access will be maintained for emergency services, pedestrians and to premises during both closures.

Thanks to the community for your cooperation.
