The Easter bunny paid an eggstra special visit to winning schools across Rhondda Cynon Taf this month – yes we know its August - to crown three schools winners of the Easter Egg Recycling Challenge.
A fantastic 53 schools from across Rhondda Cynon Taf took part in the challenge this year, which was set in April, collecting an incredible 899 kilograms of Easter egg packaging for recycling and helping to prevent valuable materials from going to waste.
The competition challenged schools to collect as much Easter egg packaging as possible, with results calculated based on the amount collected per pupil to ensure a fair competition.
After months of sorting through the plastic, cardboard and foil – the scores are in, and three very worthy schools that have gone above and beyond to recycle all Easter egg related waste have been rewarded.
This year's winners were:
- Penrhys Primary School – 802.56g per pupil (£300 prize)
- Alaw Primary School – 482.75g per pupil (£100 prize)
- YGG Tonyrefail – 456.28g per pupil (£50 prize)
The winning schools received framed certificates and prize cheques in recognition of their outstanding efforts.
Many of the collections were championed by school Eco Committees and Senedd groups, helping pupils learn more about sustainability, recycling and caring for the environment.
The prizes were presented during special celebration visits and events hosted by the Council's Recycling and Education Team.

"The amount collected was absolutely fantastic and demonstrates the enthusiasm our young people have for protecting the environment and making a positive difference in their communities.
"Recycling plays a vital role in reducing waste and conserving valuable resources. By taking part in challenges such as this, pupils are learning good habits that will benefit both their communities and future generations.
"Every Easter egg box, plastic insert and foil wrapper recycled has helped contribute towards this impressive total. Well done to all the pupils, teachers and families who supported the challenge, and a special congratulations to our winning schools."
