Initial work to inform future riverbank scour repairs in Penrhiwceiber

Riverbank

Residents may notice investigation work taking place to the pictured riverbank, near Pentwyn Sports Ground in Penrhiwceiber, from next week.

The work, being carried out by contractor Alun Griffiths Ltd, will inform a future repair scheme following scour damage to the riverbank of the Afon Cynon.

The contractor will make use of the site compound that was established during works undertaken in 2024, which reinstated a retaining wall and remediated a small landslip.

Minimal disruption is expected during the investigations, which will start from the week commencing Monday, February 9, and will last around a month in total.

However, the informal riverside footpath will be brought out of use for the duration of the works, to ensure safety.

The sports ground is built on a reclaimed colliery spoil tip. These works are therefore being funded through Welsh Government’s Coal Tip Safety Grant, through which the Council has secured £11.4 million to monitor and maintain coal tips in Rhondda Cynon Taf during 2025/26.

Thanks to the community for your cooperation during the upcoming site activity.
