Clearance work around watercourse channels at Llantwit Fardre tip site

Cwm Colliery

Residents in Llantwit Fardre may notice activity at the former Cwm Colliery tip site in the weeks ahead, as routine drainage work is undertaken.

The Council will use Welsh Government funding to undertaken vegetation clearance, as maintenance activity around watercourse channels and culverts.

The scheme will also undertake separate clearance works to create a better access for future inspections of the tip site.

Integral to the planning of this work has been the consideration of ecology, and opportunities to deliver biodiversity gain through the vegetation management requirements of the tip safety programme.

The work will be undertaken by the RCT Streetcare Team, and will start on Monday, January 19 – lasting around six weeks in total.

Residents living near the site may experience an increase in construction traffic during working hours, from 8am-5pm on Mondays to Fridays.

However, minimal overall disruption is expected, with the works confined to the tip site. Signs will be placed on site informing residents of the work.

These works are being funded through Welsh Government’s Coal Tip Safety Grant, through which the Council has secured £11.4 million to monitor and maintain coal tips in Rhondda Cynon Taf during 2025/26.
