The Council has confirmed that Berw Road Car Park in Pontypridd will close permanently at the end of the day on July 30 – ahead of the demolition works for the wider redevelopment of the former police station and car park site. This will enable an exciting future project to further improve and invest in the town.
Berw Road Car Park’s closure follows the recent announcement by South Wales Police and the Council confirming the next steps relating to policing in Pontypridd, including the closure and transfer of the former Berw Road Police Station building to the Council. The announcement included South Wales Police’s plan for a new, visible and accessible town centre base at Taff Street.
Proposals for the final project are still being developed and explored – with the options ranging from an improved public space, a modern replacement car park, better walking and cycling links, junction improvements at Bridge Street, and opportunities for new residential, commercial and cultural uses.
These exciting opportunities follow what has already been achieved across Pontypridd Town Centre – with the Council at the forefront of delivering major projects iat Llys Cadwyn, Y Muni, YMa, Cwrt yr Orsaf extra care, the old bingo hall and M&S sites, and Ynysangahrad War Memorial Park, in recent years.
Residents and visitors to Pontypridd are advised that all vehicles must be removed from Berw Road Car Park before the facility’s usual daily closure time – 7pm on Thursday, July 30. Notices are being installed throughout the building and at key access points ahead of the closure, ensuring car park users are aware of the arrangements. The facility will then remain closed from Friday, July 31.
Alternative Council town centre parking is available nearby, serving the town – including Catherine Street, Gas Road (short stay), Millfield Road, Goods Yard and Sardis Road. These car parks are within around a five-minute walk of Taff Street and Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, and provide more than 1,000 spaces combined. Frequent bus services also run through Pontypridd – via Pontypridd Bus Station and several stops across the town, including the newly-created bays opposite Pontypridd Railway Station at the former bingo hall site. Travelling by train is also easier than ever, with residents and visitors able to access more regular services and improved facilities delivered via the South Wales Metro.
The permanent closure of the car park from July 30 will allow the Council to carry out the necessary site preparation activities before the site is formally handed over to the demolition contractor Prichards in the first week of August. This is a key milestone in the future redevelopment plan for the wider site.
Further information on the timing of the demolition phase, along with the traffic management arrangements and other day-to-day disruption that may be caused, will be announced soon. Arrangements are being finalised with Prichards, with works expected to commence from Monday, August 3.

Councillor Mark Norris, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, said: “The permanent closure of Berw Road Car Park is an important next step as we move forward with the redevelopment of this key town centre site. Today’s announcement of the closure at the end of the day on Thursday, July 30, has been made at the earliest opportunity – giving residents, businesses and visitors advanced notices of the changes. Officers ask that all vehicles are removed by the time of the car park’s usual closing time of 7pm.
“Alternative Council car parking is available right across Pontypridd Town Centre, with more than 1,000 spaces provided across the five remaining local car parks. We also know that many people choose to access the town via public transport, with frequent train and bus services serving the area. We continue to encourage more people to use these services – to help reduce traffic congestion, lower journey times, and protect the environment.
“The Council has significantly invested in Pontypridd – including important buildings being delivered or revitalised at Llys Cadwyn, Y Muni, YMa and the Cwrt yr Orsaf extra care site, plus new public spaces created at the former bingo hall and M&S sites. Important investment has also been delivered at Ynysangharad War Memorial Park. The Berw Road Car Park and police station site presents a further, significant regeneration opportunity – to deliver a scheme making better use of an important location in the heart of the town.”
The former Berw Road Police Station closed at the end of June 2026 and will transfer to the Council as part of the wider regeneration plans. South Wales Police has confirmed that policing provision in Pontypridd will continue, with officers continuing to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls and neighbourhood teams remaining active in and around Pontypridd.
The Council has secured funding for the upcoming demolition phase via the Welsh Government Transforming Towns programme. Funding arrangements for future phases will be considered as proposals are developed, with the Council continuing to explore a range of potential investment and funding opportunities to support the delivery of wider redevelopment proposals
Until the new Pontypridd station opens in the near future, anyone who needs to speak to the police in person can attend Talbot Green Police Station, 1/3 Heol y Gyfraith, Talbot Green, CF72 8AJ. The front desk is open to the public from 9am to 5pm, seven days a week, reflecting the same public access arrangements previously available at Berw Road. In an emergency, always call 999.
