Road users are advised about important street lighting replacements needed on the A473 in Talbot Green – on the section between the Lanelay Road roundabout and the A4222 Cowbridge Road junction (near Leekes).
The scheme will require separate sections of the road to close, scheduled on consecutive weekends and during the school summer holiday to minimise disruption as much as possible – with the first works taking place on the weekend of Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26 (8.30am-2.30pm).
The essential scheme will replace the street lighting columns and lanterns along this key section of road, as they have come to the end of their intended design life. The works are being funded via the Council’s ongoing Highways and Engineering Capital Programme for 2026/27.
The Council has appointed Centregreat Ltd as the contractor to deliver the work over the weeks ahead, along with Yunex Traffic for a traffic signal pole relocation work, over the weeks ahead.
Road closures on weekends over the weeks ahead
The following closures will take place focusing on one section of street lighting at a time, to avoid the need for a full road closure encompassing all local routes. All of the closures listed below will take place from 8.30am-2.30pm:
- Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26 – the westbound lane on the A473 will close between Lanelay Roundabout and Cowbridge Road (as shown on the following map). This will also require the closure of the dedicated left turn lane from Cowbridge Road junction onto the A473. An alternative route for motorists is via the A473 eastbound, the Talbot Green Bypass Roundabout, A4119, Talbot Road, Lanelay Road and the Lanelay Roundabout.
- Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2 – the eastbound lane on the A473 will close between Lanelay Roundabout and Glamorgan Vale Retail Park Roundabout (as shown on the following map). This will also require the closure of the dedicated right turn lane from Cowbridge Road junction onto the A473. An alternative route is via the A473 westbound, Lanelay Roundabout, Lanelay Road, Talbot Road, A4119, the Talbot Green Bypass Roundabout and the A473.
- Saturday, August 8 – closure of the right turn lane from Cowbridge Road onto the A473 (as shown on the following map). An alternative route is via the A473 westbound, Lanelay Roundabout and the A473 eastbound. On Sunday, August 9, the closure will change to the left turn from Cowbridge Road onto the A473 (as shown on the following map). An alternative route is via the A473 eastbound, Glamorgan Vale Retail Park Roundabout and the A473 westbound.
- Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16 – this will be a repeat of the closure taking place on July 25/26, on the A473 from Lanelay Roundabout to Cowbridge Road. Please see the details above.
Please note that, for all closures listed above, access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles and to premises – but not for pedestrians. Thanks to residents, road users and local communities for your patience and cooperation as these essential works are completed over the summer.
