The Council is this week starting a scheme to undertake a series of riverbank repairs to prevent scour of the former coal tip near Gadlys Pit Car Park in Aberdare, using Welsh Government funding.
The work will be focusing on a section of the Afon Dare located generally to the south of the car park, and the pictured building – to address damage caused by erosion.
The Council has appointed EDS as the contractor to deliver the scheme. Site setup works started last week (commencing July 20) and the main scheme will start in the week commencing Monday, July 27.
The contractor will be using a section of Gadlys Pit Car Park for its site compound – this section has been brought out of public use on a temporary basis. Pedestrian access will be maintained, including via the footbridge into the car park.
Residents may notice an increase in construction traffic accessing the site via Dare Villas during work hours, 8am to 5pm. Some noise disruption at times, from construction plant and machinery, is expected.
The scheme, which will be completed during autumn 2026, has received funding through Welsh Government’s Coal Tip Safety Grant. The Council has secured £13.7 million from this Grant to continue inspections, maintenance, and works across former coal tip sites in Rhondda Cynon Taf this year.
