Treherbert flood alleviation improvements to start on site

Abertonllwyd grid

Please be advised, the first main phase of flood alleviation work at Rhigos Road and Abertonllwyd Street in Treherbert will take place from next week, to tackle a known issue of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

This initial phase of work – lasting up to six weeks from Monday, March 16 – will take place at the source of the flooding, on an area of private land near the garage off Rhigos Road.

It will aim to improve the culvert inlet and introduce a debris basin system, with the intention of minimising overflow and flooding.

The Council has appointed Hammonds ECS Ltd as the contractor to deliver this work, which is expected to cause minimal disruption locally.

Most of the work will take place off the highway, with a private garage area being used for welfare. Minimal noise disruption is also anticipated from the site.

The delivery of phase one follows closely on from ground investigations that took place in late February 2026, to inform an additional future phase of work.

Phase two is likely to include the installation of a new culvert structure at Rhigos Road and Abertonllwyd Street, to redirect water flow from the damaged existing culvert.

This future work has recently secured funding from Welsh Government’s Small Scale Works Grant for 2026/27.

In total, the Council has secured more than £6 million from Welsh Government for flood alleviation work in 2025/26, across the Small Scale Works Grant, the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Programme, and the Resilient Roads Fund. A further £4 million has been secured to continue this area of investment in 2026/27.
