Important bridge repairs require local road closure near Llwydcoed

Work will begin next week to deliver a series of repairs to the pictured highway bridge at Croesbychan Road in Llwydcoed, requiring a local road closure which will start from May 25.

These important works will be delivered via the Council’s Highways and Engineering Capital Programme (2026/27), within an allocation for Highways Structures worth over £12 million overall. This local investment in Llwydcoed will carry out several maintenance repairs and future-proof the structure.

The works will include concrete repairs to the underside of the bridge deck, removal of the footway/verge to undertake repairs to the topside of the bridge deck, and waterproofing the bridge deck. This will be followed by reinstating kerb lines, footways, verges and the highway – including resurfacing over an extended length of around 100-metres.

The scheme will begin with site setup works from Monday, May 18, and will then require the pictured section of road to close in both directions from Monday, May 25.

The closure is illustrated on the following map.

Please note that access will be maintained to Llwydcoed Crematorium. Motorists travelling from the village of Llwydcoed will be able to use Cwmynysminton Road and Crematorium Road as usual. Those travelling from the A465 will be diverted to Baverstocks Roundabout and Crematorium Road.

Horan Construction Ltd has been appointed to undertake the works on behalf of the Council, with the site activity anticipated to last around nine weeks.

However, this timescale is subject to fair weather due to some elements of the site activity taking place within a watercourse. In addition, as the full extent of the bridge deck repairs will only be known once the road surface is removed, this variable could potentially extend the work programme.

An alternative route for motorists encountering the road closure is via Croes Bychan Road, Crematorium Road and A465 Heads of the Valleys Road.

Access will not be maintained for emergency service vehicles, but will be maintained to premises.

Pedestrian access will initially be maintained during the works beneath the bridge, with the contractor creating a temporary walkway. This access is then unable to be maintained when scheme moves onto the topside works to the bridge deck.

Thanks to residents and road users in advance for your cooperation.
