Residents in Penrhiwceiber are advised about a local work scheme starting today to repair a riverside embankment at the toe of a coal tip, which requires a series of footpath closures over the weeks ahead.
The Council is undertaking this work using important Welsh Government funding secured to repair and maintain disused coal tip sites – and works have started from Monday, November 2.
The embankment that needs repairing is at the pictured location, alongside the Afon Cynon to the south of Pentwyn Sports Ground. The works will remediate an area of scour, to be carried out by Council contractor Edwards Diving Services over the next six weeks.
To proceed safely, the contractor requires restricted public access along a section of the footpath, which will be temporarily closed during day-time working hours. Appropriate signs and barriers will be installed, to communicate the closure areas to local residents.
The scheme has received funding through Welsh Government’s Coal Tip Safety Grant in 2026/27. The Council has secured £13.7 million from this Grant to continue inspections, maintenance, and works across former coal tip sites in Rhondda Cynon Taf this year.
