Today marks the start of Kinship Care Week 2026, a chance to shine a light on the vital role of the relatives and friends who step up to raise a child when their parents are unable to do so.

It’s a chance for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to celebrate the many grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings and family friends across the county borough who are providing a safe, loving homes to children – and remind them of the support that is on offer!

The Council has joined forces with the Kinship charity to support all kinship carers, even those who do not have a legal order, via the Kinship Connected scheme.

Dedicated family support worker Emma is on hand to work with carers, helping them to develop a personal plan that meets the needs of their family.

There are also support groups, social and information events and more taking place throughout the year for people to get involved.

Cllr Gareth Caple, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care, said: “Kinship Care Week allows us to celebrate and shine a light on the men and women across the county borough who have stepped in to care for a child on behalf of a friend or a family member.

“It’s a chance to recognise their incredible contributions and to raise awareness of the unique challenge they face.

“Our work with the Kinship charity allows us to deliver, with a dedicated support worker, a range of initiatives to help those who have stepped up to this incredible role.”
