Ongoing works to build a specialist care accommodation in Gelli are making good progress, as the construction phase enters its final months. The building’s roof nears completion, while mechanical and electrical installations, external works, and incoming services are currently being focused on.
The important investment to revitalise the former Bronllwyn Residential Care Home site in Colwyn Road is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to modernise the current care accommodation offer in the County Borough. The project contractor, Langstone Construction Group, is progressing the modern development towards its expected completion date during early 2027.
The accommodation will include 14 en-suite rooms with respite provision, built across three floors. It will have first-class amenities for people with a learning disability, including day rooms and sensory rooms, assisted bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, a hairdresser and a training room. Externally, there will be a vibrant courtyard, with the car park and site access being retained.
As shown in the latest site images, the building’s roof is nearing completion and, with the installation of windows having been undertaken, the building is nearing the stage where it is waterproof. Once the outstanding finishing works are completed to the upper roof, the relevant section of scaffolding can be removed. The tower crane will also be removed following this activity.
Mechanical, electrical and utility service works are progressing, with Welsh Water currently installing the incoming water supply to the site. Inside, plaster boarding is in progress, while external work around the building is ongoing.
Councillor Gareth Caple, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care, said: “It is fantastic to see the work site in Gelli really begin to resemble the finished project we’ve seen in artist impressions, as the Council invests in a first-class residential accommodation specialising in providing care for adults and older people with a disability. The project is also bringing the old care home site back into use, preventing it from falling into disrepair.
“The Council’s commitment to modernising residential care options across Rhondda Cynon Taf continues to be demonstrated in our investment. Following the recent opening of Dan-y-Mynydd in Porth, we’ve now provided three new extra care accommodations since 2020 – which also includes Maesyffynnon in Aberaman and Cwrt yr Orsaf in Graig. We’re also currently building an exciting mixed care development in Mountain Ash, while we’re committed to future projects in Ferndale and Church Village. The Ferndale project, focusing on dementia care, received planning consent in August.
“The construction phase in Gelli is making important progress, and it’s positive that the building’s roof is almost complete, that windows are being installed, and that important utility service works are being progressed. Residents will notice the large tower crane being removed over the period ahead. The project is now on course for completion in early 2027.
