Empty Homes Review

Long term empty properties can be a blight on the local environment and neighbouring properties in addition to not supporting local housing need. New build developments alone will not sufficiently meet the level of housing demand and the Council needs to bring existing housing stock across Rhondda Cynon Taf back into use.  The Council’s Empty Homes Strategy provides clear structure and guidance to facilitate this work.

While properties remain empty it is important that property owners are paying the correct amount of council tax and therefore the Council will regularly undertake a review of empty properties.

Using intelligent data matching, we are comparing records to check the validity of the discounts or exemptions awarded.

Owners who are receiving a discount or exemption but are no longer entitled will have it removed and backdated as far as the evidence supports. Where it is appropriate the Council will impose a financial penalty or prosecute individuals for failing to declare that they are no longer entitled to the discount or exemption.

What should I do if I receive a review letter about my empty property?

If you receive an Empty Homes review, please inform us of the current circumstances so that we can update our records.

The quickest and easiest way to complete your review is online. You will need your unique PIN number, Council Tax account number and postcode. You can find this information on the letter or email we have sent you.
