Flood alleviation scheme at Pentre Park and Pleasant Street

Pleasant Street, Pentre 2

The Council will begin a further scheme to alleviate the risk of flooding in Pentre, through drainage improvements to reduce the build-up of debris in the watercourse and additional gully works at Pleasant Street.

The scheme, which will begin on Wednesday, February 3, will firstly install a new catchpit manhole within Pentre Park, to reduce the risk of debris building up within the main culvert and the additional gullies which are located at the bottom of Pleasant Street. This activity will last around two weeks, and will be followed by one week of additional works to the gullies at this location.

The Council has appointed Dee Plant Ltd as the contractor with responsibility for carrying out both elements of the scheme – lasting three weeks in total.

The scheme is likely to cause minimal disruption. The first works will take place in the park, which will remain open as usual, while the activity at Pleasant Street will be localised and does not require traffic management.

The Council has secured an 85% contribution from Welsh Government for this work, with the remainder funded through the RCT Investment Programme.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “The Council welcomed a significant Welsh Government contribution to help deliver this important scheme in and around Pentre Park and Pleasant Street – and I’m pleased to confirm that work will begin from Wednesday.

“Pentre was one of the areas to be most significantly affected by the terrible flood events last February, and it remains a priority for the Council to reduce the risk in this area in the future. In September 2020, a significant scheme to install a new culvert inlet got underway at Pentre Road in partnership with Natural Resources Wales, following comprehensive investigations, debris clearance and resilience measures to prepare for the current winter season.

“The upcoming work adds to the list of flood alleviation schemes ongoing at several targeted locations in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Activity got underway at Granville Terrace in Mountain Ash last week, while culvert strengthening was recently completed in Rhydyfelin. Since the New Year, work has begun at two locations on the A4059 in the Cynon Valley – at Cwmbach and from Trecynon to Penywaun – while the Park Lane project near Aberdare Park continues.

“This month’s work in Pentre is unlikely to cause any disruption to the local community, and the park’s opening hours will be unaffected. I’d like to thank residents for their cooperation while this important scheme is delivered.”
