Work will begin next week on a second phase of repairs to the river retaining walls between Ynysybwl and Glyn-coch – requiring temporary traffic lights and a reduced speed limit at a section of B4273 Ynysybwl Road.
Several sections of the river wall along the B4273 from Ynysybwl to Glyn-coch were damaged during Storm Dennis. The upcoming work represents a second phase of repairs, after two retaining walls above the Nant Clydach River were repaired in summer 2020. Council contractor DT Contracting will begin phase two in the week commencing Monday, July 10, for completion this autumn.
This year’s scheme includes vegetation clearance to the wall faces, localised reconstruction and repointing of five masonry walls, and scour repairs to affected sections. Blockstones within the watercourse will also be secured.
In order to safely complete the works, there will be a single lane closure on Ynysybwl Road (eastbound lane), requiring two-way traffic lights. The speed limit will be reduced on a temporary basis to 30mph, which will be clearly signposted. The traffic lights’ location will change as the scheme progresses.
The Nant Clydach walkway will be largely unaffected by the works, however there will be short periods of time where the site is accommodating deliveries – when banksmen will guide members of the public who are using the path.
The scheme is included within a major programme of investment for Storm Dennis repairs in 2023/24, being wholly funded by Welsh Government.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “Three-and-a-half years after Storm Dennis, the Council remains committed to repairing and future-proofing infrastructure that was damaged. Several retaining walls along the river, adjacent to Ynysybwl Road, were damaged – and the Council completed a first phase of repairs in the summer following Storm Dennis.
“Dedicated Storm Dennis funding support from Welsh Government continues in 2023/24, and we are progressing a large programme that also includes Castle Inn Bridge in Treforest, Berw Road (White Bridge) in Pontypridd, Tynybryn Footbridge in Tonyrefail and Feeder Pipe Footbridge in Abercynon. This external funding is separate to the £4.45m allocated to Highway Structures in our own Highways and Transportation capital programme.
