Rhondda Cynon Taf is taking a big step towards a cleaner, greener future with the launch of its Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP). Backed by the Welsh Government, this plan sets out how the county borough will move towards a net zero energy system by 2050.
Created with the help of energy experts Arup, Carbon Trust, and Afallen, and co-ordinated regionally by Cardiff Capital Region, the plan looks at how we can reduce carbon emissions, use energy more wisely, and increase local renewable power, all while making homes and transport systems more efficient and future-ready.
What’s the Plan All About?
The LAEP focuses on five key areas to help us reach our net zero goals:
- Making homes and buildings more energy efficient, including upgrading heating systems to greener alternatives and improving energy efficiency measures.
- Generating more renewable energy right here in RCT, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
- Supporting greener travel options like electric vehicles, cycling, walking, and better public transport.
- Encouraging innovation, giving space for new ideas and technologies to grow.
- Upgrading our energy networks so they’re ready to support these changes.
This plan is one piece of a bigger puzzle. Every council in Wales is developing its own energy roadmap, which will help shape Wales’ national plan for a fair, affordable, and net zero energy system by 2050.
Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, shared:
“This plan gives us a clear direction for how we can all help tackle climate change, right here in our communities. We’re proud to support it, but we’ll need the help of everyone in RCT to make it happen.”
How You Can Get Involved
Whether you’re a homeowner, business owner, or just keen to do your bit, there are lots of ways to help. Try using less energy, consider renewable options for your home, or choose greener ways to travel.
