Rhondda Cynon Taf and the wider Cwm Taf Morgannwg region came together in a powerful display of solidarity during Dementia Action Week 2025, marking another successful year of the Turning Ponty Blue campaign. From May 19 to 25, local communities, organisations, and leaders joined forces to raise awareness, provide support, and champion those affected by dementia.
Throughout the week, the region was transformed with blue ribbons, bunting, and illuminated buildings, symbolising a collective commitment to making Rhondda Cynon Taf a dementia-friendly community.
A diverse programme of dementia-friendly events brought people together ‒ including a heartfelt school choir performance by students from Maes Y Coed Primary School, a 70s disco at Calon Taf, several creative sessions led by Growing Space Pontypridd, and many more ‒ each offering vital advice, support, and connection for individuals living with dementia and their loved ones.
Councillor Gareth Caple, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care and Older Persons Champion said: "Dementia remains one of the most pressing health and social care challenges of our time. Campaigns like Dementia Action and Week and Turning Ponty Blue play a crucial role in fostering understanding, providing support, and bringing our community together.
“This week has demonstrated the strength of our community and the importance of raising awareness. Thank you to everyone involved for your efforts ‒ whether you helped behind-the-scenes, put on an event, or attended one, your passion has made a real impact in ensuring that no one faces dementia alone."
The success of Dementia Action Week was made possible by the dedication of staff, volunteers, and community partners. The Council extends its appreciation to the RCT Together Team for keeping things running smoothly, and to the Mayor Councillor Sheryl Evans, Councillor Gareth Caple, and Councillor Christina Leyshon, for their ongoing support.
Additionally, thanks were extended to our community groups including Dementia Friendly Pontypridd Steering Group, local schools, Hannah from Growing Space Pontypridd, Pontypridd Museum, University of South Wales, Garth Olwg Lifelong Learning Centre, Aelwyd Housing, Trivallis, Effro Carer Connect, Calon Taf, YMa, and many more!
Ceri Higgins, Chair of the Dementia Friendly Pontypridd Steering Group, reflected on the impact of the campaign, saying: "Turning Ponty Blue is about connection. It’s about bringing people together, ensuring those affected by dementia feel supported, and celebrating the power of community."
As the week concluded, organisers reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing dementia awareness and support initiatives, ensuring that the momentum continues beyond Dementia Action Week.
