Local businesses – from shops and cafes to art galleries and repair services – could be missing out on significant reductions to their Business Rates bills by not claiming support through Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Rate Relief scheme.

Some 700 businesses have already secured the important financial support, benefiting from reduced and even zero balance rates as a result, but it is estimated there are even more eligible businesses yet to claim the relief. The closing date for this help for the 2024/25 financial year is 31st March 2025. Apply today to make sure you get this financial support for your business.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council recently confirmed the extension of its local discretionary rate relief scheme for 2025/26. The scheme provides additional relief of up to £500 a year to businesses that meet the Retail, Leisure and Hospitality scheme criteria.

The voluntary commitment, targeted at local businesses, is in addition to the 40%  relief offered by the Welsh Government’s Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Rates Relief scheme.

All businesses need to do is check they meet the eligibility criteria to secure the Welsh Government rate relief and complete a short application form.

If the business does qualify for Retail Leisure Hospitality Relief it will also receive the additional Rhondda Cynon Taf Council support for local businesses.

Businesses eligible for the relief are broadly defined as “occupied retail, leisure and hospitality premises”. You can see the full list here

There are almost 60 categories of eligible businesses listed, including shops (bakers, butchers, florists, grocers, jewellers, charities, off-licenses, hardware stores and more) plus opticians, pharmacies, furniture showrooms, car/caravan sellers, petrol stations, garden centres, art galleries, dry cleaners, tool hire, funeral directors, takeaways, wine bars, sandwich shops, gyms and more!

Cllr Christina Leyshon, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, said: “This initiative has provided essential support for businesses for over five years.

“Thanks to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s commitment to provide further, local reductions, hundreds of our eligible businesses have secured additional relief of up to £500 a year, leaving them with significantly reduced and, in some case, no rate bill at all.

“There is no cost to apply for a reduction online. You can read more, check your eligibility and apply at the click of a mouse!”
