The Council Leader and the Cabinet Member for Social Care have visited the new extra care accommodation in Porth – after the new state of the art development was handed over to the Council recently. They saw the excellent facilities for the first time, and met some of the residents who’ve already moved into their new homes.
Councillor Ann Crimmings and Councillor Gareth Caple visited Dan-y-Mynydd on Friday, August 21, hosted by Council partner Codi Group (formerly Linc Cymru) and staff from Radis Community Care, who are providing all on-site care and support to residents. The group toured the site and its impressive facilities, and met residents who are benefitting from this major investment.
Extra care provides modern housing and supports older people to live independently in their own apartments. Residents can come and go freely, with staff present for scheduled care, and help in emergencies. By revitalising the former Dan-y-Mynydd Residential Care Home site, the new development has become Rhondda Cynon Taf’s fourth extra care accommodation – joining Ty Heulog (Talbot Green), Maesyffynnon (Aberaman) and Cwrt yr Orsaf (Graig).
Dan-y-Mynydd has 60 self-contained apartments along with a dining area, a hair salon, an activity room, a Council-managed day care centre, a spa room, a launderette, a guest room and office spaces. Externally, residents can enjoy access to a large communal garden, while visitor parking is provided on site.
First residents moved in while expressions of interest remain open
Following the end of the construction phase in July 2026, the Council and its partners have been working hard to make arrangements for the first group of tenants to move into Dan-y-Mynydd. At the time of Friday’s visit, 12 tenants had moved into the new homes, while a further 29 residents have secured their places and will be moving in over the weeks ahead.
Vacant apartments remain available and prospective tenants can now view the site before applying, providing an opportunity for eligible residents and their families to see the apartments and facilities first-hand. The Council has previously published key information about how to express an interest in becoming a tenant, plus eligibility criteria and contact details for applicants.
Councillor Gareth Caple, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care, said: “I’m delighted that the first tenants have now moved into Dan-y-Mynydd quickly after its construction – and it was fantastic to meet some of the new residents in Porth on Friday. This modern development has brought the former residential care home site back into use, providing high-quality apartments and a supportive environment where older people can continue to live independently, with care and support available as they need it.
“Extra care housing plays an important role in helping people remain part of their communities, maintain their independence, and access the right support in a safe, welcoming and modern setting. While more residents are due to move in over the coming weeks, there are also vacant apartments available – and prospective tenants now have the opportunity to view the development before applying for a place. Councillor Ann Crimmings, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, added: “It was fantastic to accompany Cllr Caple on a visit to Dan-y-Mynydd on Friday, to see the brilliant new care accommodation, its modern facilities, and to meet some of the first residents to have moved in since the building’s construction was completed last month. All our existing extra care accommodation have developed into thriving community hubs that are very popular with their residents – and I’m confident this will be created at the new site in Porth.
“Together with Codi Group, we’ve delivered modern extra care developments in Aberaman, Graig, and now Porth since 2020, alongside Ty Heulog in Talbot Green. Our commitment to modernising care accommodation options for older people remains a priority, with several more projects progressing. A specialist residential care development in Gelli is nearing completion, while the construction phase of a mixed care development in Mountain Ash begun earlier this year. We’ve also committed to future schemes in Church Village and Ferndale – with the latter gaining planning permission recently in August 2026.”
