Construction of modern extra care housing at the former Dan-y-Mynydd Residential Care Home site in Porth is entering its final stages, and the Council is now opening opportunities for prospective tenants to express an interest and check their eligibility.
Subject to continued progress with construction, the new building will welcome its first tenants by late Spring – dedicated for people aged 50+ with care and support needs.
Located on Bronwydd Avenue, the development is being delivered by Codi Group (formerly Linc Cymru and Pobl Group), while care will be provided by Radis Community Care once open. The scheme will provide 60 self-contained apartments finished to a high-quality and complemented by a range of on-site amenities designed to support safe, independent living within a vibrant community.
Dan-y-Mynydd will provide a modern, warm and safe environment for people with care and support needs and is specially designed to allow people to live independently in their own apartments, while having access to on-site personal care and support services. The development’s on-site features include:
- 60 modern, accessible apartments
- On-site restaurant, lounges, and activity spaces
- Hair and beauty salon, launderette, and spa room with adapted bath
- Guest room for family and friends, scooter storage, and communal gardens.
The scheme will also provide a Council run specialist day centre for older people in the local community with an assessed social care need.
Gary Hortop, Head of Later Living at Codi Group, said: “It is fantastic to see our latest Extra Care Housing scheme nearing completion, as part of our long-standing partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council. Not only will Dan Y Mynydd provide much-needed high-quality accommodation for older people with care and support needs, along with a specialist day service for older people from the local community.
“Our team is working closely with the Council to assess local people to determine their eligibility to live at the new extra care scheme. Once the building is ready, we will be inviting prospective eligible tenants to visit and learn more about the apartments and the support available. In the meantime, information about the development, including apartment layouts and facilities, is available on our website.”

How do I apply to extra care?
If you have an allocated social worker, you can ask them to make a referral for you.
If you do not have an allocated social worker and wish to be considered to live at this extra care scheme, you should contact the Council’s Single Point of Access Team on 01443 425003 and ask for an assessment of your care and support needs. Alternatively, you can contact Codi group (landlord) on 0800 072 0966 or at: contact.centre@codigroup.co.uk.
Councillor Gareth Caple, Cabinet Member of Social Care, said: “Reaching the final stretch of the construction is an exciting moment for everyone involved. Dan-y-Mynydd will offer high-quality, modern apartments with the right support on hand 24 hours a day, helping people to live independently for as long as possible. It’s another important step in our wider programme to modernise accommodation and expand extra care options across Rhondda Cynon Taf.
“We already have popular and thriving extra care housing in Talbot Green, Aberaman and Graig, while a specialist care accommodation for people with learning disabilities in adulthood and older age is currently being built in Gelli.
“The main construction phase will also start very soon on a new development in Mountain Ash that supports a mix of extra care, dementia care and ‘Later Living’, while we’ve committed to future investments for modern care schemes in Ferndale and Church Village.”
