Residents and visitors to Pontypridd are advised about the upcoming traffic management needed at Berw Road (August 17-21) as part of the demolition phase of the Pontypridd Police Station and Berw Road Car Park buildings. This is the first of two anticipated periods of traffic management affecting Berw Road – the second is currently being arranged and will be announced in due course.
While no road closures are needed next week, the arrangements will likely bring traffic disruption at Berw Road and surrounding roads. Motorists are advised to avoid using this route if possible. The work is scheduled during the school holiday to minimise disruption as much as possible.
The Council recently completed the arrangements for the permanent closure of Berw Road Car Park on July 30. It followed an announcement with South Wales Police that confirmed the next steps for policing in Pontypridd. The Berw Road police building has transferred to the Council, while a new, visible and accessible town centre police base will be established at Taff Street.
Meanwhile, the Council is developing and exploring a mixed-use development that will utilise both the former police station and car park sites. The possible options range from an improved public space, a modern replacement car park, better walking and cycling links, junction improvements at Bridge Street, and opportunities for new residential, commercial and cultural uses.
The demolition phase for both buildings started on August 3, to be undertaken by Council contractor Prichard’s until the early part of 2027. During the first six weeks on site, activities will include establishing a site compound, undertaking specialist surveys and removal work, internal pre- works, installing scaffolding, and then starting the building demolition. The demolition phase is being supported through Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme.
A lane closure at Morgan Street (near Pontypridd Bus Station) started on August 3 and will remain for the entire demolition phase. A footway closure around the police station and car park buildings will also remain in place.
Upcoming short-term traffic management for scaffolding installation
Two further locations will need specific, short-term traffic management to install scaffolding on sections of the building. The first of these has been planned for August 2026 to coincide with the school summer holiday, while the second is currently being arranged and will be announced in due course. They include:
- Temporary traffic lights on the Berw Road-Bridge Street junction with a lane closure near the pharmacy and medical centre on Berw Road (10am on Monday, August 17, until the end of the day on Friday, August 21). No road closure is needed, but a lane closure will be in place as shown in purple on the map. The traffic lights will be manually controlled at peak hours to ensure efficiency. Buses and large vehicles will be able to use all routes.
- Temporary traffic lights on the section of Morgan Street outside the front of the police station building (dates and arrangements to be confirmed in due course). No road closure is anticipated, but temporary traffic management will be needed at the Berw Road-Bridge Street junction. Officers are working to finalise the details of this work.
The Council is working with Prichard’s to minimise disruption as much as possible, but there will be inevitable traffic delays during both elements of work. Motorists should consider using alternative routes if at all possible.
Please note, the work is being coordinated with the scheme to carry out localised repairs to Berw Road Bridge (White Bridge), taking place from August 10-16. The bridge works will be completed before the first Berw Road traffic management starts on August 17. White Bridge will always be open when there is traffic management in place affecting Berw Road.
