Improving resilience to highway flooding at a key location in Ynyshir

Ynyshir

Residents and road users in Ynyshir are advised about an upcoming Resilient Roads scheme, to deliver highway drainage improvements at a key location prone to surface water flooding.

The works at Ynyshir Road will take place on the section of the highway between the Council Community Meals Production Unit and the A4233 roundabout – and they will start on Monday, January 19.

Welsh Government funding has been secured to tackle a known issue, with flooding having occurred at this road on several occasions since 2020.

A series of surveys and investigations have been undertaken to inform the improvement work, while Resident Roads and Council funding was used in 2024/25 to design the scheme.

Work on site from January 19 will install replacement lines of carrier drains and install extra gullies – which is expected to be completed by the end of March 2026.

No road closures are anticipated, but some traffic management control will be required to allow two-way traffic through Ynyshir Road.

The construction phase is being funded via Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads Fund, along with a 10% contribution from the Council.

In total, the Council has secured more than £6 million from Welsh Government for flood alleviation work in 2025/26, across the Small Scale Works Grant, the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Programme, and the Resilient Roads Fund.

Thanks to the community in Ynysyhir for your cooperation while this important scheme is carried out over the weeks ahead.
