Residents in Treorchy and Pentre may notice ground investigations starting in their communities next week, as the latest work to inform significant, future flood alleviation investments is progressed. The Council continues to develop multi-million pound projects to alleviate flood risk for residents and businesses across the two areas, which have been impacted by flooding in recent years.
The Council has previously undertaken engagement exercises that shared proposals to significantly invest in more flood alleviation infrastructure for the respective communities in Treorchy and Pentre – to improve infrastructure and install a level of flood protection for a 1 in 100-year storm event. The measures that are being developed include capturing rainwater from upper catchments and directing it through newly-located culvert systems at ground level – while also introducing above-ground storage and natural flood management features.
Important Welsh Government funding has been secured in recent years, and is continuing to be used, to develop the proposals – towards delivering Full Business Cases and completing the detailed design stages for the projects.
In the week commencing Monday, July 20, latest ground investigation works will get underway in Treorchy and Pentre. These will both be completed by Council appointed contractor Jackson Geo Services Ltd, and will continue through the school summer holiday until the end of August.
The work will include drilling a series of boreholes and trial pits, and are essential to inform the progression of both schemes. There will likely be some localised disruption, including limited traffic management and the temporary use of some vehicle parking – but overall disruption is expected to be minimal.
The Council will be writing to local residents to inform them about the works, and advise households about any local accesses that might be affected for a short period of the work at a time. The street locations for the works include:
- Treorchy – Glyncoli Road, Cemetery Road, Column Street, Glyncoli Close, the Howard Street/High Street junction, and areas within the cemetery (working closely with the Council’s Bereavement Service).
- Pentre – Alma Place, Pentre Road, Llywellyn Street, Queen Street, Albert Street, Madeline Street, Baglan Street, Windsor Place, Griffin Park, Elizabeth Street and Elizabeth Close.
Thanks to residents in both communities in advance for accommodating this activity, which is scheduled for the summer holiday to minimise disruption.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Capital Infrastructure, said: “Installing additional protections for communities across the County Borough that are at the biggest risk of flooding continues to be a Council priority, as we respond to the threat of climate change and the increased frequency of storm events that it brings. The respective Flood Alleviation Schemes being developed for Treorchy and Pentre are among our flagship projects, to design and deliver community-wide flood alleviation infrastructure in two areas hit by flooding in recent years. The upcoming ground investigations taking place this summer will help officers further design the schemes, towards their future delivery.
“The Council has secured around £4 million funding from Welsh Government to continue to design and deliver targeted flood alleviation work in Rhondda Cynon Taf during 2026/27 – and the total sum of this investment is even greater as each scheme is matched by Council capital funding. Cabinet also recently approved the Council’s Flood Action Plan for 2026-2028, which sets important goals and strengthens our commitment to continue flood alleviation investment, targeting the most at-risk communities, over the period ahead.
“I’d like to thank residents in Treorchy and Pentre for accommodating the local works up until the end of August. While there is likely to be some localised disruption, officers will work closely with our appointed contractor to keep this to a minimum and to communicate the nature of the works to local residents.”
