Our Apprenticeship Scheme has been running since September 2012. During that time, we have employed over 400 Apprentices across the Council in many different service areas.
Rhondda Cynon Taf has twice been recognised as Employer of the Year at the Apprenticeship Awards Cymru, receiving the award in 2018 and again in 2021 for delivering an outstanding Apprenticeship Programme.
More recently, the Council was honoured with the prestigious Princess Royal Training Award for the second time in December 2025, celebrating our commitment to staff development and the positive impact this has on the organisation. We first received this accolade in 2022. We are extremely proud of these achievements, which highlight the dedication of our staff and our ongoing commitment to excellence.
The Scheme is open to anyone from the age of 16 and there is no upper age limit.
During your Apprenticeship, you will work alongside experienced colleagues, gaining job-specific knowledge and skills. Apprenticeships mix on-the-job training with classroom learning. They provide you with the skills you need for your chosen career that will also lead to nationally recognised qualifications. As an Apprentice, you earn while you learn and receive other benefits as well.
If you join RCT Council, we will provide you with a dedicated buddy to help you learn new skills and achieve your formal qualifications.
Apprenticeships with RCT Council are fixed for two years and paid at National Minimum Wage, depending on age. As of April 2026, the current rate is:
- 21 & over - £12.71
- 18 - 20 - £10.85
- Under 18 - £8.00
