Annual Japanese Knotweed treatment programme

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is only responsible for controlling Japanese Knotweed that is growing on land in its ownership.  It does not have any legal responsibility or the authority to treat private, unregistered land or unadopted lanes.  Responsibility for controlling Japanese Knotweed nearly always lies with the Landowner unless the Leaseholder is responsible for land management.

What we deal with

  • When a customer enquiry is received by the call centre or via the online website service it will be allocated to our Invasive Species officer who will reply within 15 working days.
  • Once a site visit has taken place and checks to confirm the Japanese Knotweed is on Council land, if this is threatening properties we will add the site to our treatment programme.
  • The Council has an annual Japanese Knotweed treatment programme. We follow guidelines set by the Property Care Association (PCA) and carry out a single herbicide treatment at the end of the growing season, this has been proven to be the most successful time to treat Japanese Knotweed, when the plant takes all herbicide down to its rhizomes.
  • We can offer advice and information regarding what to do and what not to do if you have Japanese Knotweed on your land.
  • We can also offer advice and information on other common Invasive Species, Himalayan Balsam, Cherry Laurel and Rhododendron Ponticum.

What we don’t deal with

  • Treat along river banks unless the land is managed by the Council
  • Unregistered land and unadopted lanes
  • Private/abandoned gardens
