Small electrical items (also known as WEEEE) need to be recycled at your local community recycling centre, leisure centre or shops.
Electrical items should not be put in your black bags or clear bag recycling but should be recycled responsibly.
Electrical items are any items that:
- have a plug
- use batteries
- need charging
- have a picture of a crossed-out wheelie bin on
Community Recycling Centres (Tips)
You can take electrical items to your local Community Recycling Centre to be recycled. Check what can be recycled at each of our Community Recycling Centres.
Leisure Centres
Our leisure centres have dedicated bins for small electrical items in their reception areas.
Small items can include:
- Personal grooming: hairdryers and straighteners
- Electric toothbrushes and shavers etc
- Kettles, toasters and blenders
- Radios, CD/DVD players
- Electronic toys/games
- Phones, tablets and cameras
- Lamps and lights
- Cables and chargers
The centres will not accept:
- items bigger than a four-slice-toaster
- Vapes of any kind
- Larger kitchen appliances such as hotplates, air fryers, microwaves, and slow cookers
- Batteries
These items should be taken to your local Community Recycling Centres instead.
The participating centres are:
Shops and supermarkets (Retailer take-back)
Many shops and supermarkets that sell electrical items have to recycle your old items for free when you are buying a like-for like product. This includes old or broken items that were not bought from that shop. For example, if you buy a new electric kettle, they must take back your old one.
Some shops go above these basic requirements and take in unwanted electrical's, even if you are not buying a new electrical item there. Check to see what shops near you provide electrical take back recycling.

- Small electrical's like toasters or kettles
- Bulky appliances
