As a result of the
Key Officer Delegated Decision made on 30th June 2026, the Council is undertaking a 6-week consultation on its new Private Rented Sector Strategy 2026 – 2031. The consultation will run from Monday 6
th July 2026 and will end on Sunday 16
th August 2026.
The draft Strategy sets out how, over the next 5 years, the Council will work with landlords, contract holders, and other stakeholders to shape and facilitate safe, good quality, affordable private rented sector housing and associated support. With a reduction of available public sector resources, the Strategy relies upon creativity, innovation and partnership working, focussing on developing an excellent working relationship with landlords and attracting inward investment to ensure that the private Rented Sector offer in RCT is attractive.
The Council’s vision for the strategy is ‘to ensure that the private rented sector in RCT offers safe, affordable accommodation, that is well managed and of a good standard, creating accessible and sustainable occupation contracts’.
The strategy is supported by the following four objectives that will drive its delivery:
- Increase the supply of affordable private rented accommodation.
- Support residents to access and sustain occupation contracts to prevent homelessness.
- Improve quality and management standards in the private rented sector.
- Strengthen partnerships and engagement to support the private rented sector.
The consultation provides residents with the opportunity to comment and contribute to the final draft of the strategy.
