The Treorchy to Treherbert Active Travel Route (Phases 2 and 3) proposes the development of new walking and cycling infrastructure linking Penyrenglen School with River Terrace, and continuing along River Terrace within the Rhondda Fawr Valley to provide improved connectivity between Treherbert and Treorchy.
The proposed route will run broadly parallel to the existing railway line and will create a strategic active travel link connecting local communities with key destinations, including, Penyrenglen Primary School, local services, and the wider community network.
The scheme aims to deliver a coherent, direct, safe, comfortable, and attractive off-road route for pedestrians and cyclists, while integrating with both existing and proposed Active Travel infrastructure across the area.
The wider Treorchy to Treherbert Active Travel Route has been divided into three phases:
- Phase 1 (Treherbert railway station to Penyrenglen Primary School) has been completed to detailed design stage and is currently awaiting Welsh Government funding for construction.
- Phases 2 and 3 are currently at preliminary design stage and are being progressed with Welsh Government funding. These phases will extend the active travel connection between Treherbert and Treorchy, further enhancing sustainable transport opportunities within the Rhondda Fawr Valley.
The consultation closes on the 21st July 2026.
