Providing new and modern facilities for our schools is a huge part of our Transforming RCT investment. Nine major projects are being developed for delivery in 2026 and beyond, as part of a £414 million funding commitment over nine years.
This investment is being delivered with Welsh Government, largely through the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. The ongoing and future projects are shown below, while there's also a link to a ‘Completed Projects’ page showing our recent/past investment.
The cumulative capital investment for our schools, for the 20-year period covering 2014 to 2033, will total almost £1 billion. Here's Councillor Rhys Lewis, the Council's Cabinet Member for Education, speaking in October 2025 about this unprecedented level of investment in our young people:
The development in Clydach Vale will provide the Council’s fifth ALN school when it opens in 2026. First-class learning environments will meet the needs of our most vulnerable learners, and include 23 classrooms and other features such as a hydrotherapy pool and a wellbeing centre. External facilities will be positioned around the building, along with a car park to serve the school site.
This Sustainable Schools Challenge project will deliver a modern primary school and community hub for Glyn-coch. It will bring Cefn Primary and Craig yr Hesg Primary together on one school site, with first-class facilities including Multi Use Games Areas, a grass sports pitch, and playgrounds. Learning Support Classes, a nursery, and a Welsh Medium childcare facility will also be accommodated.
In March 2025, the Council shared an update on the next tranche of projects that will benefit from major investment in new Education facilities via the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. A further update was shared with Cabinet Members in September 2025. Many of these projects are in the early feasibility and design stages and will be added to this webpage once they develop further.
