The Council will undertake culvert inlet improvements at Cefnpennar Road in Cwmbach, using Welsh Government funding to carry out headwall and lining improvements to improve the system’s capacity in heavy rainfall.
The work will take place just north of Springfield Close and will begin from Monday, July 12, lasting around four weeks in total. The scheme has been split into two parts, to deliver headwall improvements in the first three weeks by the Council, followed by lining works by contractor Lanes for Drains Plc.
The headwall improvements will deliver an upgrade to increase the storage volume of the inlet – while a new grill which is in accordance with current design standards will be installed. This will require traffic management via Stop/Go boards, with access to properties and land maintained at all times.
The lining works will follow on, in order to carry out repairs to the existing network. Three-way traffic lights will be required for a small aspect of this work, but access to residential properties and land will again be maintained.
This scheme has been brought forward after multiple defects were identified throughout the drainage network at Cefnpennar Road – including to the concrete culvert and several pipes. The Council will be using a structural liner to rectify defects, which is a method of strengthening underground pipes. This is a less disruptive alternative than exposing the network to carry out repairs, avoiding the need to work within residents’ gardens at several locations.
The Council has secured an 85% funding contribution from Welsh Government to carry out both elements of this £50,000 scheme.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “This upcoming work at Cefnpennar Road in Cwmbach is the Council’s latest scheme to deliver targeted culvert or drainage improvements locally – to further protect properties and infrastructure in poor weather. The Council has secured important Welsh Government funding for the work, as it continues to pursue external support to complement its own significant investment in this area.
“It follows culvert improvements in recent months at Bronallt Terrace in Abercwmboi, Granville Terrace, Fforest Road, Kingcraft Street and Campbell Terrace in Mountain Ash, along with a sustainable drainage pilot scheme at Mill Street, Pontypridd. A drainage scheme at Ty’n-y-Wern in Tonyrefail is also underway, and it will be followed later this month by a similar scheme at Standard View in Ynyshir following the appointment of a contractor.
“The Council also announced last week that additional schemes have started in Pentre – including gully cover upgrades at Pentre Road and a manhole upgrade at Volunteer Street – again utilising Welsh Government funding.
“The scheme in Cwmbach will deliver headwall and lining upgrades over the next four weeks, with some localised traffic management required due to the limited space at this section of Cefnpennar Road. The Council will ensure all usual accesses are maintained as it carries out its work, with this arrangement then continued by the contractor for its lining works to complete the scheme.”
