RCT Safe Street Ambassadors

The Council’s new team of Safe Street Ambassadors will be out and about around the towns of Rhondda Cynon Taf once again this weekend offering advice and reassurance to licensees and customers as the COVID-19 restrictions are now eased.

Outdoor hospitality, including pubs, clubs and restaurants, is now permitted in Rhondda Cynon Taf and the rest of Wales. Indoor hospitality is due to re-open on Monday, May 17.

With the easing of the restrictions, the Council’s Safe Street Ambassadors will be the “friendly face” in towns, recognisable in their distinctive blue uniforms, which include vests fitted with bodycams. They will be chatting to the public and offering reassurance, support and guidance as well as reminding people of the distancing regulations.

In association with South Wales Police and the Council’s Public Protection Teams, the Safe Street Ambassadors will also be working closely with the licensed trade in a bid to encourage everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time.

Councillor Rhys Lewis, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Well-being and Cultural Services, said: “After a very challenging year for us all, I am delighted that restrictions have now eased across our County Borough and across Wales as the COVID-19 figures continue to reduce.

“It is also so pleasing to see the vaccine programme roll-out going so well in our area, which is great testament to all those involved, both with the local authority and the Health Board and its partners.

“Due to all these amazing efforts, the hospitality sector is now open outdoors, and no doubt while many people are so looking forward to being out socially once again, many will also be anxious.

“Our Safe Street Ambassadors are there to help, offer support and reassurance, and to positively promote safety measures in our town centres over coming weeks.

The Council’s Safe Street Ambassadors will also be monitoring food and takeaway outlets as well as open spaces and areas around public parks. They will play a vital role in supporting and encouraging business owners, residents and visitors to stay safe while out socially.

The Safe Street Ambassadors have no legal powers and their role is solely in an advisory capacity. They will be working every weekend and we encourage local businesses and the public to co-operate with them to ensure that the easing of the lockdown restrictions is managed safely in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
