Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive investment proposals – have your say

Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School investment plans - residents can now have their say

Residents can now find out more and have their say on significant investment plans for Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School – which will deliver improved sixth form and sports facilities, and wider 21st Century Schools improvements.

The Beddau school will benefit from the new facilities by September 2023 as part of a joint investment by the Council and Welsh Government. The funding has been secured via the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme, in an investment totalling more than £55m across the Greater Pontypridd area.

Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School will receive a new sixth form building block, new sports facilities in addition to the athletics track and 3G sports pitch which opened in 2019, and improved 21st Century Schools facilities for pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4. Two poor-quality teaching blocks will be demolished as part of the project, while a car park and new access point will be provided.

These improvements will also provide start-of-the-art facilities for the use of the local community, increasing opportunities for wider participation.

Residents can now find out more about the proposals and provide feedback, in a consultation which ends on Thursday, December 2. They can access detailed plans included on a dedicated consultation webpage, here.

Feedback can be sent via email to info@theurbanists.net or via post to The Urbanists, The Creative Quarter, 8a Morgan Arcade, Cardiff, CF10 1AF. The feedback received will be used to further shape the project, and to inform the Council’s planning submission to the Planning and Development Committee.

Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Inclusion Services, said: “Residents can now find out more about the proposed investment for Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School, which will deliver a first-class teaching block to provide improved facilities and increase sixth form capacity at the school. It will also bring improved sports facilities, 21st Century facilities for Key Stages 3 and 4, and deliver facilities which can be used by the wider community in Beddau.

“This exciting project is part of a joint investment of more than £55m with Welsh Government across the region – which also includes a new Welsh Medium Primary School in Rhydyfelin and improved facilities on the Hawthorn High School and Pontypridd High School sites. In addition, the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme is supporting £85m future projects across Llanharry, Cymer, Glyn-coch, Penrhys, Llantwit Fardre and Talbot Green, along with a new special school – as well as separate Band B Mutual Investment Model projects in Llantwit Fardre, Pontyclun and Llantrisant.

“I’d urge the community have their say on the investment plans for Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School before the deadline on December 4. This is a Pre Application Consultation, which seeks the community’s views before a planning application is submitted for formal consideration in the future. The process is an excellent way for residents to view detailed plans, ask any questions about the scheme, and to have your say on what is proposed.”
