The Council will again take part in the annual Road Safety Week campaign coordinated by the charity Brake – with a series of community and school activities organised across Rhondda Cynon Taf from November 14.

Road Safety Week 2022 takes place from November 14-20, and this year’s theme is ‘Safe Roads for All’. It will bring together communities to highlight everyone’s right to make safe and healthy journeys on safe roads.

Brake aims to raise awareness of key areas of road safety – including the importance of safe vehicles, the dangers of speeding, the new hierarchy of road users, and the importance of inclusivity to keep everyone safe, no matter who they are or how they travel.

Rhondda Cynon Taf will once again join thousands of schools, organisations and communities across the country in marking the campaign. The Council and partner organisations have planned several activities locally, with officers from the dedicated Road Safety Team taking part in the following:

  • Kerbcraft child pedestrian training with Year 2 pupils at five local primary schools Tonysguboriau Primary (Talbot Green), Pen-pych Primary (Blaenrhondda), Llwynypia Primary School, Cilfynydd Primary and SS Gabriel and Raphael Primary (Tonypandy).
  • ‘Megadrive’ event at Coleg y Cymoedd’s Rhondda Campus in Llwynypia – educating students who are of pre-driver age on a range of important subjects, ranging from awareness of the ‘Fatal 5’ campaign to information about car insurance and driving licences.
  • Road safety talk at the Rainbow Guides group in Brynna – the talk will help the young people achieve their road safety badge.
  • National Standards Cycle Training at Parc Lewis Primary School in Treforest – this recognised training sets out the skills and understanding that are needed to cycle safely and responsibly. This will include a practical exercise on a road within the local community.
  • Pass Plus Cymru session with young drivers – this practical training course is for young drivers who have recently passed their driving test, to improve their skills and help them to drive more safely. The session will take place on Wednesday, November 16.
  • ‘Exchanging Places’ intervention in partnership with Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd – educating children at Llantrisant Primary to the risks associated with being close to a heavy goods vehicle.

Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “I’m pleased that there is such a varied itinerary of events to mark Road Safety Week, an established campaign that the Council has supported for many years. Our dedicated Road Safety Team does invaluable work in communities all year round, working with partner organisations to increase safety on our roads.

“It’s great that we will be reaching such a wide range of young people with this year’s events – from the popular Kerbcraft pedestrian training with Year 2 pupils at five primary schools, to the Megadrive event at Coleg y Cymoedd which targets those who will soon be able to learn to drive, and the Pass Plus Cymru sessions for those who have already passed their test.”
