The Council has provided an update on work to repair a retaining wall at High Street, Llantrisant. Full day-time road closures (9am-3.30pm) are required on weekdays starting from September 7, as the scheme nears completion.
Work continues to undertake necessary and essential emergency repairs to the large wall following its deterioration. Specialist contractors are working to partially rebuild and repair the structure, which is a time-consuming process that is complicated by narrow road widths and the presence of other structures in close proximity.
A one-way traffic system has been in place to ensure safety, and this was changed to operate in a northbound direction (up the hill) from July 10. This was made possible following the end of the school exam season and followed a request from local businesses in order to improve access to the town.
Project update at the beginning of September 2022
The masonry wall rebuild has progressed well, and is approaching its final stages. The scheme’s completion date is currently estimated to be in early October 2022.
The next major work on site will focus upon the wall anchoring element of the scheme. This will see anchors fixed in the ground behind the structure, and connected via heads installed on the face of the wall. This installation requires a large excavator to be located on the road. The carriageway at High Street is too narrow to accommodate the excavator while safely keeping the road open – and as a result, some full closures of the road are required.
Weekday road closures and bus arrangements (from September 7)
High Street will fully-close between its Talbot Road and Commercial Street junctions. An alternative route is available via High Street, Heol-y-Sarn, Llantrisant Business Park Access Road, A4119 and Talbot Road. This will take place from 9am-3.30pm each day (Monday to Friday only) from Wednesday, September 7, until work is complete – estimated in the week commencing September 26.
Pedestrian access will continue during each closure, while vehicular access to nearby premises will be maintained. Access for emergency services will not be maintained. Outside the closure periods, the current one-way system for vehicles will be used – operating in a northbound direction (up the hill) only.
School buses will be able to use this one-way system before and after the closure periods on each morning and afternoon.
For public transport users, local bus services will continue to follow the one-way system outside of the closure hours. During the closure (9am-3.30pm on Mondays to Fridays), the Edwards 100 service (Pontypridd-Royal Glamorgan Hospital) and the Adventure Travel 404 Service (Pontypridd-Porthcawl) will be unable to serve Llantrisant Old Town. They will divert from Beddau Square via the A473 and A4119 in both directions, in order to continue their journeys.
A free shuttle bus service operated by Edwards Coaches will run between Beddau Square and Gwaun Ruperra Sheltered Accommodation on Mondays to Fridays, to ensure passengers wishing to make onward connections can do so. The full shuttle bus timetable is included on the Council’s website here.
The current two-hourly shuttle bus service from Talbot Green Bus Station to Old Llantrisant will be unable to operate at 10am, midday and 2pm due to the road closure, but will continue to operate at 4pm on Mondays to Fridays. Public Notices and Shuttle Bus Timetables will be circulated in the areas affected by the road closure.
The Council would like to thank residents for their continued patience and cooperation as the important wall repairs at High Street enter its final stages.
